Turning a Long-Standing Concept Into a Real Product
For several years, I have been developing and writing about a proposal that I continue to believe deserves to become a real product: smart footwear that can function as a personal computing hub.
The idea is not simply to put step counters or sensors into shoes. It is to make footwear a home for useful processing power, connectivity, software, and interaction with other devices. The platform could work in two complementary ways: as the primary computing hub for dedicated Villan devices, and as an additional computing resource for existing devices from other manufacturers.
In the first model, the SmartCore or SmartSole is the computer: dedicated SmartGlasses, SmartScreen, bracelets, watches, and other purpose-built interfaces extend its capabilities by providing screens, cameras, controls, audio, and sensors. In the second model, a conventional smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop computer, or other compatible device remains the primary computer, while the SmartCore acts as an extension offering selected processing, storage, AI, sensing, or communications services. Villan should be designed to explore both relationships rather than depend on replacing existing products.
I have published multiple articles discussing the concept, its architectures, and its technical challenges. Publicly accessible examples include Modular Smart Sole Unit: The Brain Beneath Your Feet (April 21, 2025), Four Ways to Build Smart Shoes (June 6, 2025), and Villan SmartShoes and SmartSole Architecture: Footwear as the Next Wearable Computing Hub (May 6, 2026). Those dates document part of the public development history; the underlying exploration began earlier.
I now want to move from publication to development, manufacturing, and commercialization. I am seeking discussions with investors, engineers, footwear brands, semiconductor companies, and other potential partners who may help turn this proposal into a working, tested, marketable product.
The Difference: Footwear as a Computing Hub
Connected shoes and smart insoles are already on the market. Many are designed around fitness, gait analysis, movement sensing, navigation, or medical and professional applications. These are valuable technologies, but they are not the full ambition of Villan.
The proposed Villan architecture gives footwear a potentially broader role: a modular computing node capable of running software and exchanging data and computing services with external devices, either as their principal computing host or as an auxiliary resource. Depending on the version and what engineering tests show feasible, the system could include a wearable-grade CPU or system-on-chip, GPU capabilities, AI acceleration, memory, storage, secure identity, sensors, battery management, wireless communication, and optional cellular connectivity.
Imagine a compact SmartCore that can be removed from one compatible shoe and inserted into another. The same module might work with sports shoes, work boots, everyday footwear, or a manufacturer's specially designed collection. Paired with dedicated SmartScreen or SmartGlasses peripherals, it could supply core computing functions while those devices provide user interfaces. Paired instead with an existing smartphone or computer, it could operate as a supplementary computing, sensing, storage, AI, or connectivity module—subject to compatible software and hardware.
This is a concept-stage architecture, not an assertion that all these functions have already been engineered or validated. Real products must meet demanding requirements for comfort, thermal management, battery safety, impact resistance, waterproofing, radio performance, repairability, and price.
Two Complementary Computing Roles: Main Hub and Extension
1. Primary computing hub for dedicated devices.
Villan SmartCore or SmartSole could act as the central computing and connectivity unit for a family of dedicated devices. In this arrangement, a Villan SmartScreen might serve mainly as a display and touch interface; SmartGlasses could provide visual and audio interaction; a bracelet or watch could provide gestures, alerts, or biometric sensing.
These dedicated devices become extensions of the Villan computer, without each necessarily duplicating all its processing, storage, and communications hardware. Depending on technical feasibility, some tasks may still run locally on the peripheral or in the cloud.
2. Computing extension for existing devices.
The relationship can also be reversed. A smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop PC, existing smart glasses, or another computer remains the primary system, while the Villan module contributes additional capabilities. Potential services include sensor processing, local AI inference, encrypted storage, location and mobility information, independent connectivity, or workloads that can be explicitly offloaded through supported software.
Here, Villan becomes an extension of an existing computer rather than its replacement.
These modes could coexist. A person might use Villan as the main computer for dedicated glasses while walking, and later connect that same module to a laptop as an auxiliary device. This ability to participate in different computing arrangements is part of the long-term platform vision.
Importantly, a wireless connection alone does not automatically let one device add its CPU, GPU, or RAM to another. Real shared computing requires an appropriate runtime, APIs or developer SDK, device permissions, security, workload distribution, and enough bandwidth with acceptable latency. Some services can work through ordinary Bluetooth or Wi-Fi; high-performance graphics or general application offloading could require more demanding integration. The initial prototype should demonstrate a small number of actual supported functions, not promise seamless acceleration of every device.
One Platform, Several Product Architectures
A central advantage of the concept is that it does not require one fixed shoe design. Villan could be developed through several complementary architectures:
Modular SmartCore: A removable computing unit that transfers between footwear models built with a compatible compartment and interface.
Embedded SmartSole: Electronics incorporated into a sole during manufacturing, potentially suited to rugged professional or specialized footwear.
Smart Insole: An insert for existing shoes, suitable for selected pilot applications and potentially a lower-cost entry point. An initial sensor-only insole would be a stepping stone, not the full computing-hub product.
Smart Ankle: A supplementary wearable unit that could provide space for sensors, antennas, power, or connectivity where placing those components in the sole is impractical.
Complete Villan SmartShoes: Finished footwear developed with manufacturing partners, sold under Villan, a partner brand, or a jointly agreed label.

A Lean Company With Industrial-Scale Partnerships
My proposed organizational framework is 1 Holdings & Investments, a group I intend to establish and develop. Villan is currently a brand and technology project within that vision; it could eventually become a separately incorporated operating company or joint venture, subject to the appropriate legal and commercial arrangements.
I would prefer to guide strategy, business development, investment relationships, and partnerships through 1 Holdings & Investments, while assembling specialized engineering and operating leadership for Villan. The startup does not need to build its own shoe factory or semiconductor fabrication business.
Instead, the goal is a lean, partnership-led model: develop and own clearly defined technology and product designs where legally supportable, contract specialist engineering work, validate the first products, and work with experienced manufacturers for tooling, manufacturing, testing, and distribution.
Footwear companies could design compatible shoe models and integrate Villan modules. Some may prefer an OEM component arrangement; others may explore licensed designs, co-development, white-label products, custom branding, distribution agreements, joint ventures, or strategic investment. These are possible negotiation structures, not existing agreements.
Longer term, compatible footwear and upgradeable modules could create opportunities for repeat hardware sales, software and developer services, and licensing. Under the dedicated-device model, Villan could sell or license the core computing unit and a family of relatively lightweight accessories. Under the extension model, it could market supported hardware and software to users or manufacturers of existing computers and mobile devices. The two markets would need separate customer validation, compatibility commitments, and pricing research. Those revenue models are possibilities, not proven demand.
Who Could Help Build Villan?
I see several categories of potential stakeholders, each with a different reason to participate:
Footwear, fashion, and sports companies: to help design, test, manufacture, brand, and distribute compatible products.
Semiconductor and electronics companies: to explore suitable low-power computing platforms, connectivity, reference designs, and engineering support.
Smartphone, computer, wearable-device, and software companies: to develop interoperability, supported computing extensions, developer interfaces, and dedicated smart glasses, screens, and other peripherals.
Hardware engineers, industrial designers, and research institutions: to evaluate feasibility and turn architecture diagrams into verified prototypes.
Private investors, angel investors, family offices, deep-tech funds, and corporate investors: to support early technical work, product validation, and eventual commercialization.
Pilot customers and industry specialists: to identify applications where footwear-based computing solves a genuine problem better than a smartphone or wrist-worn device.
I am particularly interested in a partnership structure where manufacturers are not merely suppliers. Depending on their contribution and negotiated terms, they could become development partners, licensees, distributors, or investors with a real stake in commercial success.
A Realistic First Development Plan
A serious proposal must begin with a testable product and a reason for customers to use it. I propose the following sequence:
Stage 1 — Define the first market and secure the foundations.
Review existing publications and prior patents; clarify intellectual-property ownership; identify a specific customer problem; interview prospective customers and partners; prepare a focused technical specification and an initial budget.
Stage 2 — Build and demonstrate both computing roles.
With a hardware lead and specialist partners, assemble a low-power module that runs real software. Demonstrate at least one main-hub use case—for example, powering a dedicated display or glasses interface—and one extension use case—for example, providing a defined AI, sensor-processing, or storage service to an ordinary laptop or smartphone. A basic insole sensor demonstration may complement this work, but the core milestone must demonstrate computing, not only sensing.
Stage 3 — Integrate into compatible footwear.
Design a safe, removable housing and test the module with at least two compatible footwear prototypes. Evaluate battery life, temperature, shock, sweat and water resistance, comfort, wireless reliability, and serviceability.
Stage 4 — Run pilot projects.
Work with selected manufacturers or professional customers, learn from real use, refine the hardware and software, and obtain any required safety or regulatory assessments.
Stage 5 — Finance production and reach the market.
Choose among component sales, licensing, joint development, or finished footwear, and arrange manufacturing, quality assurance, distribution, customer support, and investment appropriate to the selected business model.
Only after feasibility work should the venture commit to a full product specification, production timeline, or fundraising target. A promising concept is not yet a validated business.
Why Explore the Opportunity Now?
Low-power computing and wearable AI are developing rapidly. For example, Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon Wear Elite platform in March 2026, describing advanced wearable computing and on-device AI across several form factors. This is relevant evidence of the broader industry's interest in capable wearable processors. It is not evidence that a particular chip is suitable for installation in a shoe, or that Qualcomm has endorsed Villan.
The key commercial question is not whether electronics can be placed in footwear. They already can. The question is whether a footwear-based, modular computing hub can deliver enough unique benefit to justify its cost, complexity, and position on the body. Could dedicated peripherals become lighter, simpler, or more flexible when the shoe provides computing? Could an existing smartphone or computer gain useful, clearly measured capabilities by connecting to it? Those questions should guide the first prototype and customer interviews.
Investment, Cooperation, and Intellectual Property
I welcome exploratory discussions concerning seed or pre-seed financing, sponsored feasibility studies, technical co-development, licensing, manufacturing partnerships, and strategically structured investment. No financing round, valuation, equity allocation, or partnership should be assumed from this article; each would be considered through appropriate due diligence and written agreements.
Relevant patents and products already exist in smart footwear and removable electronics. For example, US10499702B2, which claims an assembly arrangement for a removable smart-shoe module, lists a 2018 priority date. The existence of earlier patents does not automatically settle whether specific future Villan implementations are patentable or free to operate. That requires professional prior-art, patentability, freedom-to-operate, ownership, and trademark review.
Previous public articles document my published proposals; they do not, by themselves, confer a patent monopoly. Before releasing detailed unpublished engineering designs to prospective commercial partners, I would seek advice on confidentiality, ownership, and intellectual-property strategy.
An Open Invitation to Build It
The vision is larger than a single shoe. It is the possibility of a new interface between footwear, computing, and everyday life: a computer that can power its own dedicated devices and also extend compatible devices people already own. The platform could evolve over time alongside established footwear, electronics, and computer manufacturers.
I have continued to believe in this idea through years of writing and concept development. I would like to be part of bringing it to market—not simply watch it remain on the page. I am ready to explore practical, professional collaborations that can test the concept and, if justified by the results, bring it to production and customers.
If you represent a footwear brand, smartphone or computer manufacturer, electronics or semiconductor company, wearable-device business, software development team, engineering team, investment organization, or potential pilot customer, I invite you to contact me through the channels linked on my blogs and publications. Please indicate which type of partnership you are interested in and what you believe you could contribute. I would welcome an introductory discussion and, where appropriate, a more detailed technical or business proposal.
The objective is straightforward: develop it, test it, manufacture it, bring it to market, and make it useful.
