Introducing DV Music Composer Studio — A DV-Native Music Production Environment

Bringing DV Music Language, MIDI and Audio Together in One Studio

I am continuing the development of the DV Music Language ecosystem, and one of its most ambitious projects so far is DV Music Composer Studio — Demo V1.

The idea is to create a complete music-production environment in which DV Music Language, MIDI and recorded audio can exist together on the same timeline.

This is important because DV is not intended to be simply a visual label placed over MIDI. In the Studio, DV Music Language is treated as musical information of its own: it can be written as DV text, translated into timed musical events, performed, edited visually, played through instruments, mixed with MIDI and audio, and exported again.

The result is developing into a complete DV-native music production environment.

One Timeline for DV, MIDI and Audio

The central workspace is a multitrack timeline.

A project can contain:

  • DV Music Language tracks

  • MIDI tracks

  • Audio tracks

Each type of track has its own characteristics, but they can all be arranged together in one composition.

The timeline includes editing functions such as moving material, splitting, cutting, copying, pasting, duplicating, deleting, zooming and snapping to musical time.

There is also a dedicated ruler above the tracks. The playhead can be positioned simply by clicking or dragging along the ruler, without accidentally editing the musical material underneath it.

Tracks can also be made taller or more compact depending on how much detail the composer wants to see.


DV Music Language as an Interactive Musical Track

One of the most important parts of the Studio is the DV track.

On the main timeline, a DV composition can remain compact, showing the musical material as one understandable region rather than forcing every individual note to occupy a large amount of screen space.

But the user can open that region and enter a much deeper DV Detailed Editor.

Inside this editor, several representations of the same music come together.

DV Music Language Text

The composition can be written directly using DV notation.

DV Visual Notation

The notes are represented through the DV visual color system.

Traditional Musical Staff

A conventional score representation is shown alongside the DV system.

Detailed Note Editor

The music can also be edited spatially in a piano-roll-style environment.

Most importantly, these representations are designed to remain synchronized.

If a composer changes the DV text, the musical events change.

If a composer moves a note with the mouse, changes its pitch, moves its timing or changes its duration, the DV representation updates as well.

This creates an important idea for the DV system:

Textual composition and visual composition become two sides of the same musical language.


The DV Color System Throughout the Instrument

The DV visual language is integrated throughout the playable interface.

The keyboard uses the DV chromatic color system across the complete set of pitches, including natural notes and accidentals.

The same color relationships can appear in:

  • the keyboard,

  • MIDI notes,

  • DV notes,

  • detailed editors,

  • DV visual notation,

  • and score representations.

The goal is to create continuity between reading, writing, seeing and performing music.


A Detailed MIDI Editor Without Overloading the Main Timeline

MIDI follows a similar two-level concept.

On the main arrangement, MIDI can appear as a compact musical region that gives an overview of the notes without requiring the track to become enormous when a composition covers a wide pitch range.

Opening the region reveals the detailed MIDI piano roll.

There, notes can be edited directly:

  • move left or right to change timing,

  • move vertically to change pitch,

  • resize to change duration,

  • use grid snapping,

  • change horizontal zoom,

  • and navigate the keyboard by pitch.

This makes the main Studio easier to read while preserving detailed control whenever it is needed.


Direct Audio Editing on the Timeline

Audio is not treated as a static file that can only be moved around.

The audio waveform itself is interactive.

A recorded or imported audio clip can be edited directly from the arrangement using controls for:

  • trimming the beginning,

  • trimming the end,

  • splitting at the playhead,

  • fade-in,

  • fade-out,

  • clip gain,

  • and normalization.

Clip gain is particularly useful.

Sometimes a recording is naturally quiet. Its waveform may appear very narrow and the sound may be too low even before the mixer is considered.

The Studio therefore separates clip gain from the channel's mixer volume.

The recording itself can be raised or lowered, and the waveform responds visually to that gain change.

Normalization provides another quick way to bring a quiet recording to a more useful level.

The principle is that the audio material itself can be prepared first, while the mixer remains available for balancing the complete production afterward.


Live Recording and Explicit Track Arming

Recording should never leave the musician wondering where the performance is going.

For this reason, DV Music Composer Studio uses explicit record arming.

Audio, MIDI and DV tracks can each be chosen as the recording destination.

Only the track deliberately armed for recording receives the performance.

The Studio distinguishes between:

The selected track — the track currently being inspected or edited.

The armed track — the track that will actually receive the recording.

The transport displays the current recording destination so it remains visible even when another part of the project is being edited.

This is useful for several workflows:

  • recording microphone audio,

  • performing MIDI from hardware,

  • playing the DV keyboard,

  • using instrument pads,

  • and recording live DV musical performances.


Click, Count-In and Loop Recording Workflow

The transport includes a metronome click and looping controls.

There is also a one-bar count-in option.

When enabled, recording does not begin instantly. The musician first hears one complete measure of clicks according to the project's time signature.

So in 4/4 there are four preparation beats; in 3/4 there are three, and so on.

After that bar, recording begins.

It is a simple feature, but an important one for actually performing into the Studio rather than merely entering notes with a mouse.


Live Instrument Pads

DV Music Composer Studio also includes playable instrument interfaces.

The current pad system includes:

  • keyboard,

  • chord pads,

  • drums,

  • guitar,

  • ukulele,

  • violin,

  • and oud.

The pads can be used for auditioning instruments, inserting music and recording live performances.

Web MIDI input can also connect compatible MIDI hardware.

This allows DV composition to move beyond text entry into actual musical performance.


DVI-2 — The Browser-Native DV Instrument Engine

The Studio contains an experimental instrument system called DV Universal Instrument — DVI-2.

DVI-2 is a browser-native modeled instrument engine developed for the Studio.

Its growing instrument library includes keyboards, strings, guitars, orchestral instruments, winds, brass, percussion, synthesizers and world instruments.

Examples include:

The engine also provides performance controls such as brightness, attack, release, humanization, articulation and velocity response.

Articulation options include concepts such as natural playing, legato, staccato, pizzicato/plucked behavior, tremolo and muted playing.

The intention is to continue improving the realism and musical responsiveness of the instruments as development progresses.


Channel Effects and Global Mastering

Every channel can have its own effects processing.

The current DV Effects Rack includes controls for areas such as:

  • high-pass filtering,

  • low-pass filtering,

  • low, mid and high EQ,

  • compression,

  • drive,

  • delay,

  • reverb,

  • chorus,

  • de-essing,

  • stereo width,

  • limiting,

  • pitch correction,

  • key and scale locking.

There are also starting presets for different production situations, including vocal, room, guitar, piano, drums and cinematic sound.

But channel processing is only one level.

The Studio also includes a Mastering / Global Effects stage for processing the complete mix.

This can include:

  • master EQ,

  • glue compression,

  • master limiting,

  • and output trim.

This creates three separate levels of control:

Clip processing prepares individual material.

Channel effects shape individual tracks.

The master chain shapes the entire production.


A Real Mixer View

The Studio includes a dedicated Mixer.

Every channel created on the timeline automatically appears in the mixer.

The channel strips provide synchronized access to controls such as:

  • volume,

  • pan,

  • mute,

  • solo,

  • record arm,

  • channel selection,

  • and effects.

When many tracks are added, the mixer can be scrolled horizontally.

A separate Master section controls the global output.

The mixer does not represent a second disconnected copy of the project. It controls the same channel state as the timeline, so adjustments remain synchronized between the different views.


Exporting the Music

The Studio is designed to turn the composition into usable output.

Audio Export

Audio can be rendered to WAV with selectable sample rate and bit depth.

Available quality choices include:

  • 44.1 kHz,

  • 48 kHz,

  • 96 kHz,

  • 16-bit PCM,

  • 24-bit PCM,

  • and 32-bit float.

MP3 export is also offered when the browser provides a genuine compatible encoder, with selectable bitrate options.

The software deliberately avoids creating a file labeled “MP3” when the browser does not actually support MP3 encoding.

MIDI Export

Musical information can also be exported as MIDI.

Export Score

The Export Score function brings together several representations of the musical work:

  • DV Music Language text,

  • DV visual-layer notation,

  • and traditional staff notation.

This is especially important to the broader idea behind DV Music Language: the same musical information can move between textual, visual, performative and traditional musical representations.


Designed for Desktop, Tablet and Smartphone

A music studio naturally has more space on a desktop, but DV Music Composer Studio is also being developed for tablets and smartphones.

The interface adapts according to screen size.

On a phone, the timeline remains the main workspace while the editor and inspector can flow below it instead of becoming an inaccessible side panel.

Special attention is also being given to smartphone landscape orientation, where vertical space is extremely limited.

The Studio separates different kinds of navigation:

  • whole-page vertical navigation,

  • timeline navigation,

  • detailed DV-editor navigation,

  • and piano-roll pitch/time navigation.

Dedicated navigation controls make it possible to move between major areas such as:

Top · Timeline · Inspector · Mixer

and, inside the DV editor:

DV Text · Score · Notes · Top

Developing a serious multitrack music environment that can also work on a small smartphone screen is an important part of this experiment.


A Browser Studio — With Technical Limits Kept Honest

DV Music Composer Studio is currently browser-based.

That provides important advantages: the software can be opened directly on the web and can use technologies such as Web Audio and Web MIDI.

But a browser also has real technical limitations.

For example, a normal web browser cannot simply execute desktop .vst3, .dll or Audio Unit plug-ins.

The Studio therefore does not pretend that uploading such a file magically turns the browser into a native VST host.

Instead, the current DVI-2 instruments and DV Effects are browser-native.

A future desktop or appropriate bridge architecture could expand this further and potentially provide access to native plug-in ecosystems.

I believe it is better to build that capability properly than to claim support that a browser does not genuinely provide.


Part of a Much Larger DV Ecosystem

DV Music Composer Studio is not being developed alone.

It is part of a growing family of DV projects that includes music composition, performance, visualization, education, theater, dance and martial movement.

Together, these projects explore a larger question:

Can a language be used not only to describe music and movement, but also to compose, visualize, edit, teach, perform and communicate them?

DV Music Composer Studio is one attempt to explore that question through music production.


Where the Project Stands Today

DV Music Composer Studio — Demo V1 is still an early-stage prototype.

It is not presented as a finished commercial DAW.

Many areas can continue to develop: sound realism, performance, editing depth, mobile interaction, advanced mixing, automation, instrument technology and additional production capabilities.

But the foundation is becoming increasingly substantial.

DV text can become music.

Music can become visual information.

Notes can be edited directly.

MIDI and audio can coexist with DV.

A performance can be recorded.

Tracks can be mixed and processed.

A finished mix can be rendered.

A score can present DV and traditional notation together.

And all of these ideas can exist inside one DV-native musical workspace.

That is the direction of DV Music Composer Studio.
